In 1938, the Budgerigar and Foreign Bird Society was formed by a small group of bird fanciers. The founding meeting was held at the Corps of Commissionaires' Hall, west of Bay Street in Toronto. For the first year after the club was formed meetings were held at the homes of various members. The society staged some outstanding shows during the early years of World War II, one of the best shows was held at the Canadian National Exhibition. During the early years, Raymond McLeod played a very important part in our society. Not only was he elected president, he also obtained the charter and helped with the bulletin, and it was through his efforts that the society made great progress. It should be noted, at that time, the society was the only one catering to budgerigars and foreign birds in the whole of the North American Continent. The Ontario Government insisted on issuing its own bands for the birds until 1952, when at last the club could issue its own and things really started to move. Not only was it swamped with orders for bands, but the membership grew. Our society has seen many changes. We are happy that some of the other clubs that exist today were once a part of the original Budgerigar and Foreign Bird Society. Our society is known and respected throughout Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. Still, we are striving to become better known. We presently host two bird shows a year, a young bird show in the Spring and our annual show in the Fall. Club meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month, except July and August, at the Banbury Community Centre, 120 Banbury Road, Don Mills, at 7:30p.m. Each meeting is designed to be informative and helpful to novice and experienced bird people alike. Our membership is made up of bird fanciers who only own one bird to professional breeders with hundreds of birds. If you are a bird fancier, why not join one the oldest bird clubs in Canada. The Budgerigar and Foreign Bird Society. New members are most welcome. |
